Abigail Conway
The Candle Project

Candles and candle light have been written into literature for hundreds of years. Theatre and live performances were first performed by candle light. We use candles to symbolise devotion or diversion, birthdays, death and decoration. Behind every candle burning there is a story; of sorrow, or sadness, sickness or of health, failure and success, faith, hope and charity.

In a fleeting world that offers little space for listening, “The Candle Project” creates a space for contemplation, connection and regeneration. The artist Abigail Conway, who was a guest at HELLERAU in 2019 with the project “Home Sweet Home”, invites the audience to work together to make beeswax candles and to make wishes for the future. On 8 July, all the candles will be lit together in a festive ceremony accompanied by choirs from Dresden. As they burn down, the embedded messages become visible again and can be shared and taken away.
