For the McDonald’s Radio University (MRU) the Japanese conceptual and theater artist Akira Takayama adapts the Utopian plan for a decentralized and mobile university once designed by the British architect Cedric Price. Takayama uses these plans to develop a model that transmits knowledge and enables an education for refugees and migrants. In a three-day lecture series, teachers from non-European countries deepen and expand on the traditional academic canon of knowledge by drawing on their own life experiences and research interests. So far, the McDonald’s Radio University has been held in restaurants of the fast food chain by the same name. Berlin will be the first city where a boat is converted into a temporary mru-restaurant. While this boat will move back and forth between the Spree river and Landwehrkanal, the McDonald’s Radio University will also present a research center at HAU, which the Japanese architect Keigo Kobayashi designed. The installation-like exhibition offers insights into reference points used by the University and will also showcase the next steps of the unfolding project.
