Dionysos Stadt Open Air

With “Dionysos Stadt Open Air”, Christopher Rüping’s highly acclaimed and multi-award-winning production for the Münchner Kammerspiele will be specially adapted for the Sommerbau. A theatrical marathon lasting almost ten hours, it spans the arc of history of gods, heroes and humans from Zeus and Prometheus, via Achilles, Helen of Troy, Cassandra and Electra to the present day (including Zinédine Zidane). The Greeks, who are not quite so ancient in Rüping’s version, no longer want to be the victims of fate, determined by the external forces that constantly and inevitably affect them. They begin to challenge the gods and the mythical world, and start wrangling, even though initially every outcome appears to be the wrong one, fraught with guilt and fatal. Humans today have different problems, don’t they? But the world’s first democracy, which came into being in Athens in the 5th century B.C., dealt with these issues at the theatre, which was both a popular celebration and people’s assembly in one: a cult of collective emancipation. Athenian audiences of the time made ancient stories their own in tragedies, comedies and satyr plays, bringing these to life and making them surmountable. Now “Dionysos Stadt Open Air” contemporises the characters, texts and political circumstances of Greek drama and approaches the questions and conflicts of ancient times from a present-day perspective.
