(LA)HORDE
Marry Me in Bassiani

The audience went wild when French media-art collective (LA)HORDE energized last year’s Summer Festival with their jumpstyle sensation. Since then, the trio has been appointed as new directors of the Ballet National de Marseille and is returning with THE BEAST, a large scale installation at Kampnagel’s Vorhalle, and the world premiere of a new dance work for the grand stage. MARRY ME IN BASSIANI focuses on the powerful Georgian folk dance. In the Soviet era, this dance with elements of martial arts and ballet, as well as very fast turns was considered a vehicle for peaceful resistance. Now it is performed at weddings, and has become the (commercial) billboard for the young nation.

With Iveroni Group, founded by former dancers of the Georgian National Ballet, (LA)HORDE is exploring the resistance potential of the dance with a 1500-year-long history and placing it in the context of the most recent example for danced protests in Georgia. After a raid on the Tbilisi nightclub Bassiani (which will be a guest at the Summer Festival on August 10), tens of thousands of young people danced in front of the capital’s parliament building to loud techno music in the spring of 2018. MARRY ME IN BASSIANI is a spectacular evening about resistance, solidarity and the energetic power of people dancing toghether.
