Mykki Blanco
After Mykki Blanco distilled a form of experimental hip hop from a whirlpool of musical styles and expanded it live into excessive celebrations of queer and transsexual experiences, the musician sat exhausted in Portugal in 2018 and thought about Mykki Blanco. Or rather, how they would sound in the original without samples, and how an entire sound universe could be created from scratch. Together with producer and multi-instrumentalist FaltyDL and a lush live instrumentarium, they created the album “Broken Hearts & Beauty Sleep” about love, self-determination and beauty sleep in 2021 in various European and US cities. Last year, audiences also had the chance to hear this album live at Kampnagel – with the full performative Blanco force that leads to a release of happy hormones on both sides of the stage. Now Mykki Blanco returns and presents the follow-up album “Stay Close To Music”, which was created parallel to the first, with a musical spectrum that ranges from gothic rock to orchestral arrangements to cavernous trip-hop beats and gathers guest stars such as Michael Stipe or ANOHNI. Content-wise, the album is Blanco’s spiritual manifestation as a child of Black American Jews who reaches the ecstatic state of Black queer joy through music – and now reignites it live in the club.
