Space, Practices, and Perspectives – The Production Houses and the Independent Scene

  • Panel

The independent scene (Freie Szene) is designed as a laboratory and adriving force for a more diverse artistic and cultural cityscape. Its members work in collectives, as soloists, and in temporary coalitions. In their work, they often engage with current social questions and phenomena that lie beyond the scope of the public or city theatre. Instead, they make use of the city at large, perform at unusual locations and open up new cultural realms. The production houses and the independent scene are co-dependent – as venues, platforms, and as a springboard. At the same time, their relation is not always free of tensions: who gets to decide who plays what on the few available stages? What does continuity and trust mean in this collaboration? Which perspectives can the independent scene develop? And which ones does it need?
