Right to the City – How Urban Forms of Resistance are Reconfigured in the Age of Motion
“City” suggests freedom, participation, and the possibility of individual development and emancipation beyond social control and conformity. To which degree, however, are these conceptions mere projections that shatter when faced with the reality of cities in the age of increasing, both voluntary and forced, migration? What determines a life with no permanent residence? Which dreams get lost on the way, and which may be found?
The spiraling routes taken by young migrants are at the core of the ethnographic research that urban scientist AdbouMaliq Simone has conducted over the last several decades. The journeys she has documented raise questions about new forms of cohesion that have sprung between people in constant motion and ask how they help to reshape the city and what they can do to fight for their “right to the city.” Within this context, Simone focuses on the coalition between migrants and renters that has recently changed and currently still transforms the tension between protest and (housing)policy.
