City as Factory – How Logistics and Master Plans Change City Life

  • Panel

The booming logistics industry provides complex supply chains around the world in order to deliver goods in demand as fast and cost-efficient as possible. Logistics have not only revolutionized our general idea of how goods are produced and distributed, they have also expanded the scope of consumption and produced new work relations. While some sit on their couch, shop online, and enjoy their urban lifestyle, others struggle under precarious working conditions. Almost unnoticed, the logistics industry has developed into the third strongest economic power in Germany. At the same time, this has tremendous effects on the fabric of our cities. Invited by FFT Düsseldorf, which will move into its new venue in the city’s former main post office by 2021, an interdisciplinary group of urban scientists has analyzed the connections between logistics and city development. They will comment on the findings of the “Case Study Düsseldorf” under the heading “city as factory.”
