Artist Residency

  • Residence

HELLERAU – European Centre for the Arts offers with its residence program the opportunity to conduct artistic research, to deepen and expand one’s own working methods, to develop projects and to be in exchange with other artists and agents in the cultural field. The residence program is primarily aiming to artists working in the fields of contemporary dance, theatre, performance and contemporary music. The spectrum is extended by individual residence programs, for example in connection with the media festival CYNETART in the field of digital art and in the field of photography in cooperation with PORTRAITS – HELLERAU Photography Award.

The artist residency program comprises three focal points:

Project Residencies

The promotion of artists and groups working on projects in cooperation or co-production with HELLERAU. During a research or production residence, artists develop and deepen concrete project ideas. Tryouts are possible as part of the residence process or productions are created which are later presented in the HELLERAU program. These residencies are awarded directly to artists whose artistic work is supported by HELLERAU and to whom a long-term working relationship is to be established.

Partner Residencies

In cooperation with various partner institutions such as the Goethe Institut Istanbul, the Goethe Institut Quebec, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, the Stiftung Kunst und Musik für Dresden and other cultural partners, the residency programme is internationally linked. HELLERAU offers artists a place to work in Dresden. In addition to working on their own artistic projects, HELLERAU also facilitates contact with the regional scene and thus promotes an exchange of artistic perspectives and working methods.

Open Call Residencies with thematic viewpoint

The Kulturgarten HELLERAU invites you to artistically deal with topics of sustainability, ecology and the public. An open call is planned for one or two residencies for the public (ecological) space in connection with the Kulturgarten. This part of the residence program is currently in the construction phase. Further information on the profile and the application modalities will be published here shortly.

The application possibilities can be found in the respective calls for proposals under “Current tenders”.

We are pleased to welcome the following Resdienzkünstler*innen:

During her residency in HELLERAU, she will explore how feelings change, how they affect the body, and how these changes can be read in a particular socio-political and cultural dynamic.

Melih Kıraç (Spring 2020): The dancer and performer tests contemporary dance techniques, improvisation and develops multidisciplinary approaches in his works. Since 2011 he is a member of the collective Çıplak Ayaklar Kumpanyası, an independent dance collective that organizes performances and workshops for a local dance community.
