Alliance of International Production Houses

Since the beginning of the 2022/23 season, HAU has been partnering with eleven artists who have fled Ukraine who work in the fields of acting, directing, dance, choreography, stage design, sound, and mime. They have continued their artistic practice in Berlin as part of the “DACH” residency programme, which aims to send a message of solidarity in the face of the war in Ukraine. To conclude the programme, HAU extends a warm invitation to a parcour combining installation and performance.

Installations

HAU2 Staircase
In her sonic works, Anna Ivchenko turns to aquatic soundscapes to address questions of collective memory. Her works suggest looking at rivers as witnesses to historical events and environmental changes that left no memories. “Are you here?” works with the sounds of Lybid river, a long forgotten actor of the Kyiv city landscape, while “The sounds of a river that remembers everything the city doesn’t” is based on the sounds of the Ustia river and the Basiv Kut lake that are located in Rivne, Ukraine.

HAU2 Studio and Foyer
The video installation “Place of Peace” by Antonina Gotfrid deals with the everyday realities of Ukrainians who have fled the war for other European countries, the loss of their homeland, and their attempts to find their footing in a new life. The objects that appear in the film and shape the space of the installation were created in collaboration with the artist Alina Kashitsyna.

“GREENHOUSE”

In “GREENHOUSE”, Tereza Yakovyna and her team deal with houses and the experience of losing them, as well as with the provisional accommodation that follows, along with the growth therein. How do communities form in the midst of catastrophe? The audience is encouraged to explore this question together with the performers.

Stage Programme

The resident artists will present their work in this multifaceted showcase. In the performance “THREADS”, Alex Basovska and Liza Mamon dive into the complexity of identity and interpersonal encounters in times of war. In an immersive, meditative setting, they are searching for ways to address trauma while resisting victimization.
In her solo dance piece, Natalie Zdhan demonstrates the power of radical presence, while Iuliia Gersahnik and Marina Kurochka take the HAU2 stage for their own version of “Katcha” – the Ukrainian folk song ‘Plywe katscha’, which gained significance in memorialising the victims of the Euromaidan and nowadays also commemorates the victims of the Russo-Ukrainian War. Anna Ivchenko’s audio work “A Monument to Irpin River” also explores forms of remembrance – and how they can change when they turn away from humans and towards landscapes and non-human actors, such as the river Irpin.
