PARTICIPATION AND DEMOCRACY

In Europe and across the world, we are seeing an increasing number of democracies entering into a tangible state of crisis. These crises are often triggered by pivotal economic and political events, but also by the challenges associated with war, expulsion and refugee movements. In societies heavily influenced by social media, these challenges are sometimes emotionalised, falsified and augmented to the status of serious emergencies. Political developments in the past several years have also served to force a process in which national and European histories are being revaluated and interrogated anew. The artistic work carried out by the alliance members in the framework of the “Patricipation and Democracy” theme focuses on precisely these socio-political phenomena, many of which are having an effect on our historical and democratic self-understanding.
